چکیده
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brains are characterized by extensive oxidative stress. Additionally, large depositions of amyloid -peptide (A ) are observed, and many researchers opine that A is central to the pathogenesis of AD. Our laboratory combined these two observations in a comprehensive model for neurodegeneration in AD brains centered around A -induced oxidative stress. Given the oxidative stress in AD and its potentially important role in neurodegeneration, considerable research has been conducted on the use of antioxidants to slow or reverse the pathology and course of AD. One source of antioxidants is the diet. This review examines the literature of the effects of endogenous and exogenous, nutritionally-derived antioxidants in relation to AD. In particular, studies of glutathione and other SH-containing antioxidants, vitamins, and polyphenolic compounds and their use in AD and modulation of A -induced oxidative stress and neurotoxicity are reviewed. © 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. In studies on enzyme activity or gene expression at the protein level, data are usually analyzed by using a standard curve after subtracting blank values. In most cases and for most techniques (spectrophotometric assays, ELISA), this approach satisfies the basic principles of linearity and specificity. In our experience, this might be also the case for Western-blot analysis. By contrast, mRNA d...

In this study, free radical scavenging abilities of ferulic acid in relation to its structural characteristics were evaluated in solution, cultured neurons, and synaptosomal systems exposed to hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals. Cultured neuronal cells exposed to the peroxyl radical initiator AAPH die in a dose-response manner and show elevated levels of protein carbonyls. The presence of ferulic ac...

Fundamental solutions to a generalized Helmholtz equation are determined through dependent variable transforms using the material properties and independent variable transforms based on conformal mapping. This allows variable wave speed media to be examined under some fairly broad material property constraints. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The influence on the lipid profile and lipid peroxidation in rabbit-liver mitochondria exerted by different edible oils high in oleic acid but different non-glyceride phenolic fractions was studied. High-phenolic virgin olive oil from the variety “Picual”, the same oil submitted to an exhaustive process of washing to eliminate the phenolic fraction without altering the lipid profile and high-ol...

The main goal of this study was to compare effects of ethanol-soluble fractions prepared from various types of teas on sucrose-induced hyperlipidemia in 5-week old male Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats (n 5 6–8 per group) weighed approximately 200 g were randomly divided into control diet, sucrose-rich diet, green tea, oolong tea and black tea groups. Control-diet group was provided with modified AIN-...
